Apple is now trying to expand its presence in the Automotive markets. The company has been secretly working on developing Artificial Intelligence technology for autonomous cars. During an interview with Bloomberg, company’s CEO Tim Cook elaborated the plans they have for enhancing towards the new technology.
"We're focusing on autonomous systems, and clearly one purpose of autonomous systems is self-driving cars [but] there are others", Cook discussed in the interview with Bloomberg. During the interview, he also told that it is probably one of the most difficult projects to work on.
With the evolution of self-driving technology in cars, many technology companies saw it as an opportunity to develop similar technology. This has lead to an uncontrolled slide of such companies into the auto industry. To be in the race of autonomous cars, Alphabet Inc’s Waymo has now partnered with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Lyft Inc to develop similar technology. In addition to this, BMW AG, General Motors Co. have opened their offices in Silicon Valley to acquire autonomous vehicle startups.
The company had plans of building its own car until last year when they shelled the project giving priority to the underlying technology for autonomous driving. Apple had hired more than 1000 engineers for its Project Titan, as the car team is known internally after it started in 2014.
In the interview, Cook didn’t actually make a commitment to developing its own autonomous car. In his words, “I think there is major disruption looming there”. Apple seems interested in developing AI technology for the connected cars.
