Apple is now developing its own processor targeted specifically for AI involved tasks on future devices. As per Bloomberg reports, the chip is internally known as the ‘Apple Neural Engine’ and it will help in improving the way its devices performs different tasks including facial and speech recognition which otherwise requires human intelligence.
According to the person familiar with this told Bloomberg, “Apple has considered offloading facial recognition in the photos application, some parts of speech recognition, and the iPhone’s predictive keyboard to the chip”.
The company is currently using two different chips to handle complex AI processes - the main processor and the graphics chip. This new chip will handle tasks performed by Siri and other AI-related tasks, allowing Apple to improve the battery performance.
With Siri Apple has got an early start in voice recognition, the company is looking to use AI in all their products. Amazon and Google have already taken step towards using AI with the products like Amazon Echo and Google Home respectively.
Apple doesn’t want to be left behind in the race of Artificial Intelligence. This AI-enabled chip would help Apple in integrating more advanced capabilities into devices like self-driving cars and gadgets running Augmented Reality.
